The “autopilot” effect and how it prevents the child from memorizing new things

Baby and memory

In modern conditions, the problem of memorizing new information is becoming increasingly relevant. One of the reasons that complicate this process is the “autopilot” effect. In this article, we'll talk about this condition in more detail, as well as learn how to get out of it.

Does your child love learning new things? We're waiting for him at Progkids!

What is the autopilot effect

The “autopilot” effect refers to the condition when a person performs tasks automatically without thinking or realizing them. This often happens in everyday life when we repeat the usual actions: driving a car along a familiar route, doing routine household tasks, etc.

Why autopilot is useful

Here are a few benefits of this condition:

Save energy

Autopilot allows you to perform familiar tasks without significant mental energy expenditure, freeing up resources for more complex tasks.

Improve efficiency

Performing routine actions automatically speeds up the process, as this does not require constant decision-making.

Release attention for other things

While a person performs a task in “autopilot” mode, they can simultaneously think about something else.

Reduce stress

A familiar routine automatically reduces stress levels.

Develop important skills

Bringing certain actions to “autopilot” contributes to their deep assimilation.

Why “autopilot” is harmful

If this state becomes the dominant way of interacting with the outside world, autopilot is not useful, and here's why:

Awareness decreases

Acting on “autopilot”, we can miss out on details and nuances of a particular situation that require reflection.

Lack of engagement

Automated task completion reduces interest in the process. This has a negative effect on motivation; the feeling of job satisfaction is lost.

Opportunities are being missed

By acting thoughtlessly, we lose the chance to learn something new or do something important.

Errors may appear

A person in an “autopilot” state is rarely able to think critically, so in some unusual situations they may make mistakes.

Control is lost

Being on autopilot for a long time can result in an inability to make informed decisions.

The quality of work decreases

Automating actions can increase the quantity but have a negative impact on the quality of tasks performed.

Why does “autopilot” prevent you from memorizing new things?

This happens for several reasons:

#1 Lack of concentration

In autopilot mode, attention is scattered and we don't focus on new information. This reduces the likelihood that the knowledge gained will be stored in long-term memory.

#2 There is no repetition

To remember something, you need to actively use information. When we're on autopilot, we usually don't spend time meaningfully repeating new material.

#3 Information is not processed by the brain

Autopilot involves performing routine actions without in-depth analysis. This prevents the brain from making new neural connections.

How to help your child get out of autopilot when he needs to remember something new

This can be done using the following strategies:

1. Explain to your child that it is important to be very careful when learning new material. Help him understand the moments when he acts automatically.

2. Encourage your child to participate more actively in the learning process. Have him ask questions to the teacher, discuss the material with others, and explain it to someone.

3. Encourage your child to use associations, rhymes, or visualization to remember information. This will make the learning process more fun and help you better consolidate the material in your memory.

4. Break information down into small pieces. This way the child will be able to focus on one task and avoid overload.

5. Include mindfulness exercises in your child's daily routine. This will improve concentration and attention.

6. Use games, quests, or other interactive methods to learn new material. This will make the learning process more exciting.

7. Take regular breaks to give your child time to rest.

8. Praise your child for his efforts and successes.
