Ikigai, or how to help a child's development in Japanese

Parent and child are engaged in calligraphy

Inspiring a child to learn is a process that requires a lot of attention and effort. There are many traditional ways to do this, but today we're going to look at a Japanese philosophical concept and see if it can help us develop a child.

And if your young genius wants to learn how to code, we're waiting for him at Progkids!

What is ikigai?

Ikigai is a Japanese philosophy that means “the meaning of life”. It helps to find harmony between dreams, profession and vocation. Ikigai helps to identify a person's true interests and hobbies, which is especially important in childhood. The use of ikigai principles in education allows creating an environment where children are not only happy to learn new knowledge, but also strive to understand what is closer to them.

Ikigai Facts

1. Part of Japanese culture

Ikigai is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and philosophy, where great emphasis has always been placed on harmony in life.

2. Not just about work

Although often associated with professional activity, ikigai actually covers all aspects of life, including personal interests, relationships, and spiritual development.

3. Four components

You can think of Ikigai as the intersection of four areas: what you love; what you're good at; things you can get paid for; and what the world needs.

4. The link to longevity

Research suggests that having ikigai can contribute to longevity and a better quality of life. In Japan's regions with high life expectancy, people often mention personal ikigai as a source of happiness.

5. Awareness and presence

Ikigai encourages people to live consciously and appreciate every moment of life, finding joy in simple things.

6. Uniqueness for everyone

All people have their own unique ikigai that can change over time.

7. Influence on motivation

People who find ikigai are often more motivated and focused in their actions because they understand what they are living for.

Ikigai and child development

Applying ikigai principles to raising and educating children can help them develop awareness and commitment. Here's how ikigai can be integrated into a child's life:

#1 Find yours

Encourage your child to explore different activities so they can find things they really enjoy. This could be sports, music, programming, or any other activity that arouses his interest.

#2 Develop

Help your child develop skills in areas that interest them. This will not only strengthen his self-confidence, but will also give him the opportunity to achieve mastery in his chosen field.

#3 Feeling valuable

Explain to your child the importance of what they do and how it can benefit others or society as a whole. This way he will be able to see meaning in his actions and aspirations.

#4 Know that it's not for nothing

Show your child how their knowledge can be put into practice in the real world. If your child is interested in a particular field, discuss possible career paths or ways to use their skills to earn money in the future.

#5 Finding harmony

Teach your child to find a balance between different aspects of life — study, leisure, hobbies, and communication with loved ones. This contributes to the development of a harmonious personality.

#6 Express yourself

Give your child the opportunity to express thoughts and feelings through creativity. This will help him better understand himself and his desires.

#7 Choose your own path

Encourage your child to pursue their dreams by setting goals and working towards them. This way he will develop determination and perseverance.

Motivational ikigai phrases to hang above your child's desk

An ikigai philosophy that focuses on finding meaning and fulfillment in life can inspire children and adults to achieve goals. Here are some motivating ikigai-inspired phrases:

1. “Find what you love and do it with your heart!”

2. “Your passion is your strength.”

3. “The purpose of life is to bring joy to yourself and others.”

4. “You're unique and you have a gift that can change the world.”
