The history of 3D modeling

Many people believe that modern computer graphics have appeared only recently. But it turns out that's not the case! Of course, what we see on screens today is more than impressive, but super effects and realistic graphics are not the result of recent decades. All of this goes back quite a long way in the past.

What is 3D modeling?

3D modeling is a digital visualization technology that can be used to create a three-dimensional photorealistic image of any object or environment. 3D graphics are used in various fields of professional activity, such as the film industry, video games, virtual reality, video blogging, architecture, design, and others.

When did the 3D story begin?

In 1960, William Fetter, a graphic designer at Boeing, first coined the term 3D modeling.

In 1963, Sketchpad was written, which allowed the user to manipulate simple shapes. It was this program that laid the foundations and made a great contribution to the development of 3D graphics.

The 1970s were a decade of real breakthroughs in rendering and computer imaging. The University of Utah became a center where new technologies developed. It was at this time that the future founders of Pixar released from there, and the famous 3D model was created — a Utah teapot created using Bezier curves. This tool is still in use today.

The Utah teapot can be seen in museums and various shows. He has even appeared in animated films like Toy Story and Monsters Inc.

In the 1980s, 3D graphics left the university for the first time to spread around the world. This is when the first Nintendo video games appear and the Star Wars movie comes out.

Since then, 3D technologies have been getting cooler!
